Joplin arrived in Sedalia in 1894 as a touring musician and played as a solo musician at dances and at the major black clubs in Sedalia, among them the Maple Leaf Club. The Maple Leaf Rag is associated with the city of Sedalia, Missouri, although there is no record of Joplin having a permanent residence there before 1904. As a result, Joplin became dubbed the "King of Ragtime" by his contemporaries. It is one of the most famous of all ragtime pieces. It was one of Joplin's early works, and became the model for ragtime compositions by subsequent composers. ![]() The Maple Leaf Rag (copyright registered on September 18, 1899) is an early ragtime musical composition for piano composed by Scott Joplin. That's where Microsoft has put a glance bar that lights up when you've got incoming calls and text messages. Microsoft came up with a neat little trick for the hinge area when the Surface Duo 2 is closed. The back is smooth, too, save for a rather prominent camera bump. Because that's a simple square, I'll occasionally forget which side is up and try to open the Surface Duo from the wrong side. The front of the phone features a Microsoft logo. Like its predecessor, the Surface Duo features two glass panels that come together on a pair of very sturdy hinges located at the top and bottom of the phone. ![]() Avoid itching, massaging, or picking around the injection site.Take acetaminophen to reduce pain as necessary. These are available for purchase in our offices. If you’re familiar with Photoshop, the easiest way to get a taste for WebP is to try out the WebP Photoshop Plugin. Let’s optimize! Converting your Images to WebP This is the nature of developing for the web: Have your Plan A ready for browsers that can handle it, and have your Plan B (and maybe Plan C) ready for those browsers that are less capable.Įnough with the disclaimers. It’s a format you can serve to browsers that can use it, but you should keep older image formats on hand for other browsers. It’s important to remember, though, that WebP is not a replacement for JPEG and PNG images. If you had the chance to make your website faster for over two-thirds of your users, would you pass it up? I think not. These browsers make up a significant portion of users worldwide, however, meaning that nearly 70% of browsers in use support WebP at the time of this writing. Since WebP is a Google technology, support for it is fixed to Blink-based browsers. So the next question, of course, is “what’s the browser support?” Not as slim as you might think. Not too bad, especially when you consider that the visual quality between the two is comparable. The JPEG version on the left weighs in at 56.7 KB, and the WebP version on the right is nearly a third smaller at 38 KB. In the above example, the visual differences are nearly imperceptible, yet the differences in file size are substantial. Below is a comparison of a lossy WebP image and a JPEG image: Can you tell the difference? (Hint: the WebP version is on the right.) WebP’s visual quality is often comparable to more ubiquitous formats. It supports encoding images in both lossless and lossy formats, making it a versatile format for any type of visual media, and a great alternative format to both PNG or JPEG. WebP is an image format developed and first released by Google in 2010. Let’s begin! What is WebP, and Why Should I Even Care? Such a topic can easily be its own book, but the focus of this post will be very specific: Google’s WebP image format, and how you can take advantage of it to serve images that have all the visual fidelity your images have now, but at a fraction of the file size. Many techniques exist for slimming down unruly images, and delivering them according to the capabilities of the devices that request them. The solution to this dilemma is not one dimensional. The challenge is in walking the tightrope between visually rich content, and the speedy delivery of it. Images are expressive tools, and they have the ability to speak more than copy can. This is a problem, because images represent a significant portion of what’s downloaded on a typical website, and for good reason. You’re suddenly reminded of the bad old days of dial-up. On a doddering mobile connection, you can even see these images unfurl before you like a descending window shade. These images tug at your senses, and for content authors, they’re essential in moving people to do things.Įxcept that these images are downright huge. We’ve all been there before: You’re browsing a website that has a ton of huge images of delicious food, or maybe that new gadget you’ve been eyeballing. ![]() ![]() The issue is, even though single-player is listed as a feature on Steam, this is all just too much to keep up with by yourself. ![]() (:5-6) Reproduced in Succeeding GenerationsĪ. Jacob’s covenant recollections were redolent with faith that God would fulfill the promise through him.ģ. Hughes: The point of Jacob’s recollections of the promises here is that as heir to those promises, he had the right to decide to whom they would go with his blessing. “and will give this land to your descendants after you for an everlasting possession.’” “and I will make you a company of peoples,” “and He said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and numerous,” Luz = old name for Bethel (28:12-14 35:11-15) – reference here is primarily to the second appearingĢ. “Then Jacob said to Joseph, ‘God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me,’” “When it was told to Jacob, ‘Behold, your son Joseph has come to you,’ Israel collected his strength and sat up in the bed.” (:2) Jacob (Israel) Gathers His Strength to Communicate His Final Blessings Jacob was 130 at this point (47:9), and this is seventeen years later, when he is 147 (47:28), so the boys are at least 19, just a few years older than Joseph when he was sold into slavery.Ģ. When Jacob came into Egypt, two years of famine had past (45:6), so they were at least two. They were born (41:50) before the years of famine came, during the seven years of plenty. Parunak: In picturing this scene, we should keep in mind that these sons are mature young men. “Now it came about after these things that Joseph was told, ‘Behold, your father is sick.’ So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim with him.” (:1) Joseph Responds to Reports of His Father’s Failing Health (:1-7) PREPARATION FOR DEATHBED BLESSING FROM JACOBġ. This was the fourth consecutive generation of Abraham’s descendants in which the normal pattern of the firstborn assuming prominence over the second born was reversed: Isaac over Ishmael, Jacob over Esau, Joseph over Reuben, and Ephraim over Manasseh. He got a double inheritance through his two sons who were adopted by Jacob. One reason this chapter is here is to explain why Joseph isn’t listed as one of the tribes in Israel. He adopts Joseph’s two sons as his own, blessing Joseph through them. Steven Cole: In Genesis 48, we see Abraham’s grandson, Jacob, handing his heritage in God to his son, Joseph, and to his grandsons, Manasseh and Ephraim. ![]() In this section he first declares and explains what he wishes to do, then actually performs the adoption, and finally deals with a side-effect of this legal action. Parunak: The point of Jacob’s action in these verses is to elevate Ephraim and Manasseh from being Joseph’s sons to being counted as peers with Jacob’s other eleven sons. It may well be that this is the thing that the writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews thinks is the important thing in the life of Jacob, the conviction of things that are not seen. Lewis Johnson: In the remainder of the instances of faith in Hebrews chapter 11, that characteristic of faith shines forth, the conviction of things not seen. ![]() And his sunset faith unleashed the wild grace of God to do its wondrous work in the generations to come. By faith Jacob crossed his hands in worship and blessed his adopted sons as he surrendered his life and the future of his people to God’s word.
